Beach, Please! There’s just something about all things coastal… that laid-back, calming feeling that comes from the ocean and it’s surroundings, the soothing and natural colors of the sand and sea… you get my drift. I may live in New England, but California Cool is totally my vibe. So, when designing my home, I’ve found I’m most drawn to a relaxed, coastal aesthetic.
I MAY LIVE IN NEW ENGLAND, BUT CALIFORNIA COOL IS TOTALLY MY VIBE.
Beachy Vibes
The Cali style is really defined by a pretty minimalistic approach to decorating, with an emphasis on earthy tones and texture. From sandy-beige blankets to wicker chairs, neutral textures are what I use to capture that West-Coast style I crave, and personally I love to throw in some pops of black for a more modern feel. Keeping our spaces light and breezy yet still warm and cozy is my ultimate goal. We do have two little ones, after all, so less “stuff” makes it WAY easier to keep tidy, because Mama ain’t tryin’ to pick up all.the.things ALL day ERRDAY. (That’s a lie. I totally am… but that’s more related to my OCD which is a whole different topic…) Anywho, just saying… in our home, simplicity + cozy is key.
Living Room
Though we have an open floor plan, our living room is rather small. It is, however, where we spend most of our time. For those reasons, I wanted an inviting area that isn’t too formal but still hits me in my design-loving happy place. Neutrals with babies, you ask? Well, my mentality is that there’s gonna be spillage no matter what. Embrace it. Baby spit-up is white, after all, so it’ll go with the aesthetic. And if the occasional blueberry explodes on your ivory couch or carpet, it’s a good excuse to test out the theory that white vinegar is the solution for everything.
Dining Room
Our dining space is S.M.A.L.L. But that doesn’t mean it has to be boring! For me, the warm, wood table coupled with the black, industrial chairs creates such a fun mix of soft and strong style. We eat at our kitchen island much more often than we do this quaint little spot, but it’s a surprisingly comfy AND chic space for entertaining when we have guests.
Family Room
Ahhh. Our Family Room. The newest addition to our home. This is where I really let that modern-coastal flare shine. I really wanted some sophistication and clean lines, but it’s a basement nonetheless, so I made sure to add a little extra “cozy” by way of comfy pillows, lots of throw blankets (it gets freaking cold up in herrr!) and texture upon texture to liven up the monochromatic color palette.
